Inaccurate or outdated domain registration data is a common cause of attribution issues. When registration records don't match your current organizational structure, third-party platforms may incorrectly link domains to your digital footprint.
When this happens, reviewing and correcting registration details, or submitting a complaint to ICANN Contractual Compliance, may help resolve the issue.
SecurityScorecard does not manage domain registration records or ICANN processes, but provides this information as a resource for customers investigating attribution issues.
When this applies
This may apply if the domain registration details are incorrect or no longer reflect the current organization. For example:
- A domain was registered using an employee’s email address, and that individual was never employed by the company or is no longer employed.
- The organization name in the registration is being used improperly by a registrant not associated with that organization.
- The registration details are incomplete, outdated, or inconsistent, and the abuse contact hasn't responded.
These situations can lead to attribution that does not align with your organization.
What to do
To report suspected issues with domain registration:
- Go to ICANN’s Submitting a Complaint to Contractual Compliance page.
- Select the complaint type that best matches your situation.
- Complete and submit the form with the required details.
